Whether you're training for a marathon, getting back to the gym, chasing a PR, or simply trying to keep doing the activities you love, sports massage can help keep your body moving well.
At Portland City Massage, sports massage isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your session is based on what your body needs that day—whether that's focused work on a cranky calf, hip or shoulder, some general recovery after a hard training week, or a full-body session to help you feel put back together again.
Sports Massage for Runners & Athletes
Training puts stress on your body. That's part of the deal. Massage can be useful throughout a training cycle to address muscle tension, improve mobility, help with recovery and keep small problem areas from becoming bigger distractions.
You also don't need to be a competitive athlete to benefit from sports massage. Runners, cyclists, swimmers, hikers, skiers, pickleballers, weekend warriors and people who simply like being active are all welcome here.
Before a Race
Have a big race coming up? Let's get you on the massage table!
Pre-race massage is generally more focused and less aggressive than a typical treatment session. The goal isn't to completely overhaul your body a day or two before you race—it's to address areas that are feeling tight or restricted and help you head into race day feeling ready to move.
If something has been bothering you throughout training, it's usually better to schedule before race week rather than waiting until the last minute.
After a Race or Hard Training
After a marathon, endurance race or particularly tough training block, your body may need something completely different.
Post-event sessions can be adjusted depending on how you're feeling and how recently you raced. Sometimes that means gentle recovery work. Other times, once the initial soreness has settled down, we can spend more time on areas that took the biggest beating.
The important part: your massage should match where you are in your training and recovery—not follow a predetermined routine.
Sports Massage at Portland City Massage
I've been a licensed massage therapist since 2003 and have spent much of that time working with active people and athletes. I'm also a former All-American collegiate runner and cross-country coach, a triathlete and runner. I've previously served as Sports Massage Team Chair for the Maine Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association. I also taught Sports Massage and Anatomy & Physiology at the New Hampshire Institute for Therapeutic Arts.
So yes—I understand what it's like when you really, really don't want someone to tell you to just stop doing the thing you love.
Sessions may incorporate myofascial work, cupping, targeted massage, movement and other techniques depending on what your body needs. There's never an extra charges for different techniques or specialized equipment.
