TMJ Massage & Jaw Pain Relief

If you wake up with a tight jaw, clench your teeth during the day, or deal with headaches that seem to start in your temples, jaw, or neck, you may be experiencing TMJ-related muscle tension. TMJ dysfunction is often driven by chronic muscle overuse from stress, posture, and unconscious clenching—not just the joint itself. Most people don’t realize how much jaw tension contributes to:

-Jaw tightness or locking

-Clicking or popping

-Morning jaw soreness

-Headaches

-Neck and shoulder tension

-Teeth clenching or grinding

-Facial tension and fatigue

-Ear fullness or pressure

-Tooth sensitivity or grinding (bruxism)

TMJ-related tension is often driven by stress, posture, or unconscious clenching — and it rarely resolves on its own without targeted treatment. But, soft tissue work addressing the muscular and fascial tension contributing to TMJ symptoms can be quite helpful in relieving symptoms. A jaw-focused appointment aims to release tension in the muscles that contribute to jaw dysfunction (not just the jaw itself). During a typical session we'll work on the muscles of the jaw (masseter and surrounding muscles), temporalis (right by your temples), neck and upper shoulders, as well as the fascia of the face, head/scalp, and cervical spine.

Usually when working the jaw, we include both external and intraoral techniques (when appropriate and consented to), as well as gentle neck and cranial work to reduce overall tension patterns. The goal is not forceful manipulation — but nervous system downregulation and precise release of chronic holding patterns. This work should never be painful, but instead "productive".

Clients frequently report less jaw tightness or “locked” feeling after even a short 30-minute session. If you’re dealing with ongoing jaw tension or headaches, TMJ-focused bodywork can be a helpful first step in reducing muscular strain and improving comfort.
